LITTLE-TRIP CITY GUIDE
Geoje travel guide: Windy Hill, pebble beaches, camellia islands and forests
Geoje brings sea cliffs, pebble beaches, camellia-covered islands, mountains and forests close together. Plan the coast you can drive to separately from islands reached by boat.

Coastal hills and rock islets at the southern tip
Windy Hill is a seaside hill north of Dojangpo village, once called Ttibatneul and known as Windy Hill since 2002; a windmill was added in 2009. Nearby Sinseondae is a large rock on the Dojangpo shore with a pebble cove beside it and an observatory above looking over the islands. Windy Hill has been chosen several times for the Korea Top 100, and the city presents the two together as one of its Geoje 9 scenic sites.
Haegeumgang is a rocky islet about 500 m off Galgot-ri, about 116 m high, designated a scenic site in 1971. It is seen from cruise boats circling the Cross Cave and rock formations rather than visited on foot, so check departure points such as Dojangpo, Hakdong and Gujora and their sailing conditions first.
The Yeocha–Hongpo Coastal Road runs about 3.5 km from Yeocha pebble beach between mountainside and sea cliffs, partly unpaved. Straight lines to islands seen from the road are not routes, so plan safe places to stop.
Choose between pebble sounds and sandy beaches
At Hakdong Mongdol Beach the sound of waves rolling black pebbles was chosen among Korea’s 100 natural sounds, and cruise boats to Haegeumgang and Oedo leave from its pier. Pebbles shift and can be slippery, so watch your footing at the water’s edge.
Myeongsa Beach is 350 m of clear water and fine sand backed by old pines, with one section operated as a dog-friendly beach. Gujora Beach has soft sand and gentle depth, and boats to Naedo, Oedo and Haegeumgang leave from Gujora port next door. Check beach season and lifeguard arrangements for your dates.
Garden and camellia islands reached by boat
Oedo-Botania is a botanical island garden with about 1,000 subtropical plant species, the Venus Garden, the Stairway to Heaven and a lighthouse. Jisimdo, 1.5 km east of Jisepo, is shaped like the character for heart and called Camellia Island for its many camellias; the ferry takes about 15 minutes.
Naedo combines evergreen camellia and machilus forest with shore rocks, has a viewpoint toward Oedo and Haegeumgang, and a Neolithic shell midden was found there. Gonggotji, about a 20-minute woodland walk from Yegu village, is a terraced garden-farm of daffodils and camellias above a pebble shore. Choose islands after checking departure ports, return sailings and weather notices; unverified routes receive no guessed travel time.
Walk slowly through mountains, forests and gardens
Geoje Cable Car runs 1.56 km from Hakdong Pass to the summit of Nojasan, where the top station gives a 360-degree island view. Geoje Natural Recreation Forest on Nojasan has maples, oaks and other broadleaf trees, with forest cabins, camping decks and a wood-culture play center.
Geoje Maengjongjuk Theme Park offers walks, crafts and an adventure course in a forest of moso bamboo, the thickest bamboo species, and Geoje Botanic Garden, a current Korea Top 100 place, holds about 10,000 tropical plants of some 300 species in a 30 m glass Jungle Dome. Yangjiam Sculpture Park sets about 40 sculptures and seasonal flowers on a clifftop in Neungpo. Check closing days and activity bookings with each venue.
Stories of war, sea and people
Geoje P.O.W. Camp Historic Park stands on the Korean War camp site that held up to about 173,000 prisoners, with surviving remains designated in 1983. Okpo Great Victory Memorial Park, completed in 1996, commemorates the 1592 naval victory at Okpo with a 30 m tower and an exhibition hall.
At the Geojehyeon Government Office the Joseon-era Giseonggwan guesthouse and Jilcheong office survive as a historic site, and nearby Geoje Hyanggyo places teaching halls in front of its shrine halls. Dundeokgiseong is a mountain fortress showing 7th-century Silla construction. Maemiseong Fortress is a seaside wall built stone by stone by Baek Sun-sam after Typhoon Maemi destroyed his fields in 2003, while Cheongma Memorial Hall and the Birthplace of Former President Kim Young-sam tell the lives of a poet and a president born on Geoje.
Choose dining and accommodation around your stops
